Los Angeles is one of the best cities to chase your dreams and one of the easiest too.
If you’re reading this post, you’re either a family member, friend, or a dreamer like me. If you’re a dreamer, you probably want to know how to make your dreams come true in Los Angeles aka La La Land. Luckily, I’ve created this guide that will give you specific steps on how to make it in LA FAST. By now, you have to know I’m kidding. If you haven’t figured that out yet, then here is your REALITY CHECK.
Sorry to be so harsh, but there is no easy guide to making it in LA. If you don’t know who I am, I’m a dreamer that moved to Los Angeles 6 years ago with a dream of working in the entertainment industry. Now, I’m a host for one of the largest digital networks for pop culture and entertainment news. Although to many it seems like I’ve “arrived”, this is only the beginning. There’s no sense in boring you with the intricate details of how I’ve made it this far without packing my bags to go back to Atlanta (we’ll save that for the book), but I’ll give you some tips to help you not give up on your dreams.
People message me all the time to get advice on breaking into the entertainment industry. Most of them reach out to me specifically about hosting. They want to know how to work for major networks like E!, how to get on CLEVVER, etc. The fact is it takes HARD WORK. There are easy ways to rise to top in the industry, but remember, taking those routes don’t always guarantee success or longevity in this business. If you really want to know what it takes to make your dreams a reality in Los Angeles or anywhere, continue reading below.
YOU MUST HAVE PATIENCE.
When I first moved here, someone said that you have to live in LA for at least 5 years for people to know you’re serious about your dream. Most people don’t survive that long, but you have to realize that “overnight success” usually is the result of years of hard work. If you put in the work, opportunities will constantly come and go. Not every opportunity that presents itself will work out; however, sometimes we are just meant to learn and move on.
WORK FOR FREE.
This needs no explanation. You must be willing to get experience without making a dime. It takes quite some time to start getting paid for what you want to do, but sometimes experience is enough payment. If you stay in the game long enough, it will pay off. The question is, how do you stay in the game?
STAY IN THE GAME.
You have to come up with creative ways to stay in the game. First, observe your peers and make sure that you are doing everything you can do to compete. I’m not saying look at others as competition, but you do need to make sure you are keeping up and maybe even going beyond what everyone else in your field is doing. Also, if you need to pick up a side job or two while chasing your dream, DO IT! It’s only temporary. Just keep reminding yourself of that. Another thing to remember is that sometimes you have to spend money to make money. I’m not talking about spending frivolously, but if there are purchases that will help advance you closer to your dream, don’t be afraid to
spend invest. Be smart about it though.
This is just a taste of advice. I’ve learned so much out here about myself, the industry and chasing a dream. I’m not kidding. There will be a book in the distant future, but keep up with my thoughts on here in the meantime. Keep chasing your dreams and I’ll talk to you soon. Is it weird I always want to end my blog posts with XOXO Gossip…? I won’t though. BYE!
